Five Signs That Your Air Conditioner Needs Repair

Matthew HritzNOLA AC BLOG

It may be hard to determine if your air conditioner needs repair. As summer gets into full swing, it’s important to make sure your home is at a comfortable temperature. Your air conditioner is the number one piece of equipment that will keep you and your family comfortable. If you think your air conditioner isn’t running properly, here are five signs that your air conditioner needs repair.

Broken Thermometer

The thermometer is the key to your air conditioning running properly. A broken thermometer can mean a system turns on and off for no reason, but can also make your home warmer or cooler than you intended. If you look at the thermometer and it says 70, but feels like 75 then it’s possible that the sensor is broken.

System turning off and on

The system is supposed to turn off and on as the temperature outside changes, however, if it seems to be doing it quickly or unnecessarily, then your system may be too big for your home. You can try to turn the system off for 30 minutes and then turning back on to see if it will work properly.

Leaking

This is a frequent problem with systems and can be caused by numerous reason ranging from drainage holes being blocked to holes in the condensation pan. This can cause your system to run slower or not at all.

Loud AC

Air conditioners are supposed to make noise, but if your system seems to be unusually loud it can indicate a problem. Generally, when you hear rattling, grinding, popping or hissing that means your system needs to be cleaned. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that, you should contact a professional.

Odor

Bad smells are not a natural part of the air conditioner’s cooling process. If you have a musty smell wherever you store your conditioning unit, it’s likely the cause of a leak that has caused mold to build up. If you smell rotten eggs, that means there is a natural gas leak which is very dangerous. You should turn your system off and leave the house.
